The American Cancer Society advises all adult women to perform a breast self-exam on a monthly basis. This exam should be done at the same time each month as hormonal fluctuations can affect a woman’s breast tissue. Premenopausal women should conduct their exam toward the end of their menstrual period when hormonal changes are least likely to affect the breast tissue. Postmenopausal women should choose a day of the month and perform breast self-exam on that same day every month. Any new lumps or changes in the feel of breasts should be evaluated by a healthcare provider.
